Fire management at Karakamia

AWC’s fire management activities at Karakamia include the following: :

  • Annual prescribed burns to protect built infrastructure and to create a reasonable mosaic of different age-since-fire vegetation across the sanctuary.  This pattern of burning will help ensure that, if a wildfire occurs, the entire sanctuary is not burnt (unburnt areas will operate as a refuge for native animals).
  • Maintenance of fire breaks around the sanctuary.

Ground-based burning typically occurs in autumn/winter, often involving the local rural fire service.

In 2014, 5 hectares were burnt in prescribed fires.
